Course conditions, opinions and observations

I just spent about a half hour reading all the awesome reviews of Parma on disc golf course review. It makes me proud to know that we have such an incredible course in this area. The one consistent complaint was signage. I wanted to post this before it slipped my mind. One thing we should do, especially given next year's events, is to figure out how we can put out more "next tee" signs in the areas that can be confusing. One way would be to affix an arrowed sign on the pole under the basket leading to the next tee. I am looking for other suggestions as well. Another thing that I would love to see there would be to make sure that scorecards with maps are available at the kiosk. I think those additions would be the icing on the cake at Parma.

Rather than putting a sign on the pole, I would suggest that we put arrow signs on a nearby tree,like the ones I put up at Churchville and Sawyer Park. I will be happy to do that at Parma.

Alan, thanks for volunteering --- I don't mind the tree signs at all --- but there are a few holes where there may not be a tree to use where we may need to direct players from the basket ---- or maybe on those difficult holes, direction wise, that we need multiple next tee signs --- such as from 1 to 2 or from 10 to 11 and 11 to 12 and 15 to 16 and 16 to 17. Thanks again Alan :D

I'll work on getting maps made up and keeping them stocked. I'm out there pretty regularly during the summer and can give stacks of them to other Parma regulars to replenish the supply.

How about weather proof copies of maps at each tee or basket? That way when are beginning/finishing a hole you have an immediate reference. I would just hate for someone to continuously be making maps and distributing them. Seems like it can get costly and if one jackhole decides to take all the maps then they ruin it for everyone.

Just my $.02.

I played a winter game at Parma a couple of weeks ago with some friends, and I could definitely see the need for signs. It was too cold that day to take notes. So, this spring I will go play a solo round and write myself some notes, go home, make signs, and go back and put them up. Very similar to Churchville and Sawyer Park signs I put up.

I'm actually surprised that the problem at parma is signage. The only path i can imagine being hard to find is from 1 -> 2. I'm not sure if that's because 1A is rarely in and would lead you there otherwise, but what else gets to be confusing at parma? i suppose from 5 > 6 could be some confusion with 7 right there, but i feel like there's not too much needed done. No offense, id rather see some time go into stairs at 17, if just from the basket to the top of the hill. The boy scouts did an awesome job on the stairs at Gates, why not see if we, or they, could do something similar this spring? I'm all for making my home course as great as can be, but i think signage is pretty all right, all things considered. Maybe just a sign on that first tree on hole 1 that had an arrow pointing left would be enough, hell i could do that today with some spraypaint and a 2x4.

Just my .02 cents.

Hole 10-11 is an issue. I know many people miss 11 altogether. 11-12 is tricky too.

I think Parma is one of the most underrated courses on dgcr. I've met a few big pros that put it in their favorites as well. Hopefully fixing the navigation will get this course the rating it deserves.

You guys can do your part to bump it up by reviewing it yourselves...

Parma does need some signage, just nice arrows pointing to the next tee is all that's needed. I have some 1 x 4 s and paint, maybe that'll be my spring course karma project.

I think steps on 10 (both going down and going up), and fixing a few of the steps that were added to 16 should be high priority. We get a little rain before/during the RFDO, and those hills will be treacherous!

Anyways, getting back to the topic at hand, I think Alan's little arrow signs will work great, as they have in the past. The arrow priorities would be:
- getting from 1 -> 2
- at the opening in the woods at 4 (so you don't play to 7)
- after hole 5, so you don't go to 7's tee
- after 9, directing you up to 10 (may already be an arrow there)
- getting from 10 -> 11 (may need multiple)
- may be overkill, but a little arrow wouldn't hurt after 11
- maybe an arrow pointing left at the V in the path going to 16?

Adam, I believe you hit all of the right places where we need signage. Making steps up and down the hills would be the icing on the cake for this course. I think we should try to make the hills as safe as we can prior to the RFDO

I posted signs at Parma a couple of weeks ago. Any suggestions for additional signs there?

Meanwhile I will try to get Chili and Basil done by this fall.

Peter,

You are very welcome, and thank you for your kind words. Making signs so new players can find there way around a disc golf course is something I feel compelled to do.

Thanks so much Alan for your contribution to the courses with the signs. It is so important to have good signage and your efforts are much appreciated. :clap: :clap:
