American legion Charity Event

Postby Flashlite » Thu Dec 6, 2012 11:12 am

I am running a charity event for my senior project for the American Legion. The course is a temporary course set up around my high school day for one day. I am in need of 18 metal baskets, if people that have baskets could commit and tell me they will bring them that would be awesome. This will be a one round Doubles, but if people would like to stay for a singles round afterwords or another doubles then you can. I am also in need of $25 hole sponsorships to help make this go as smoothly as possible.

Tony,

I have 3 metal baskets (In-Step) that I would be happy to loan for your competition. We used them at Webster this year and for the Ace Race. Always available upon request.

there has been a change in format and cost of the tourmanet. It will be two round random draw doubles with unlimited mulligans for $1 each for the first round only.

The Entry fee has been lowered to $20 a Person.

i liked the idea of one round singles in the morning and then an optional doubles round in the afternoon. U might get a better turnout b/c some people cant commit for the whole day. Also if the weather is bad ppl will be more likely to brave it for one round. I agree with what ron said unlimited mulligans turns people off. If u are trying to raise more money use less % for payout or do trophy only. In my opinion, if i was a high school teacher i wouldn't care how much money you raised. Id be more impressed if you got a big group of people out to support u and you were able to run a smooth organized event. Since ive already given you my 2 cents, i'll also sponsor a hole for your tournament.

Mike, I thank you for the sponsor ship, I know you havent seen the lay out of the course yet, But is there any hole # you would specifically like to sponsor? And I will take your 2 Cents into account and talk with my partner about it.

Ron, Any peticular reason you dont like the Mulligan Idea? It was an Idea for me to Increase the amount of money I could raise based on what the Ice bowl does.

Just as Mike said, I happen to be one of those people that is turned off by unlimited mulligans. It slows play, takes the competitive aspect out of the game, and knocks the sport down a notch on how legitimate it is, since you can just use a mulligan for a bad shot. Not only are we (you) showing everyone the sport of disc golf, we're showing them the competitive side of disc golf which also shows we aren't out just "throwing frisbees." I'd also rather just less payout or trophy only too. Since i just gave you $.02, I'll give you another $24.98 and sponsor a hole. Start at hole 2 if that works.

I am also one who does not like the unlimited mulligan idea, and I will follow suit by sponsoring a hole. (I would like either hole 5 or 7)

To raise extra $, maybe do some ctps where 50% gets paid out, do a putting competition with $1 fee where the winner gets 1/2 the pot, a long drive competition where you pay to throw 3 discs and winner gets 1/2... Or even for all of those, if there is a cool trophy that says "distance competition champion" etc.. Instead of cash prizes, I would pay to participate in such activities.

I am still unsure of my work schedule, but hope to be able to participate in the event.

I thank you both for your input, and your sponsorship,Again I still need to talk to my partner about the mulligan situation, But I think that we will ax the idea I will hopefully be able to get back to you all about it within the next few days.

And on a semi related note, I am going to run another CTP on hole 9 during Leagues.

Tony, here is another $.02...more mulligans = longer playing times. So axing the idea is solid. All Mike and Ron's points are good. I can only stay for 1 round as well but a topic to ponder is that mixing pro's with beginners gives the rookies a chance to see top players correctly throw and approach and putt. In the old days the first round of a tournament was mixed, so all could get a chance to play in a group with a top pro and see how they do it. I didn't notice in this thread if you addressed that possibility but its worth considering, if the idea is for more turnout than payout. To me, I wouldn't care about payout so much as turnout. I enjoy the charity events for exposure to the sport more than the competition aspect. Hopefully nothing comes up, but I will be there with an extra metal portable in case you need it.

Tony, I know that you were talking about a different format for the day's events from what the flyer said. Can you tell me what the format is going to be please? One round of doubles or 2? Mulligans or not? Doubles followed by an optional singles round? If you are doing doubles and then an optional singles round, will you be able to hold onto the baskets and get them to their owners after the event? I myself would only be able to come for 1 round, so it is important to know what the final plan is to help determine whether I can play or not. Thanks Tony !!!

Thanks for getting back to me --- I am also glad that you are not doing the unlimited mulligan thing --- it really takes the fun out of competing when you do that --- I understand why we do it for the ice bowl, but that's enough IMO. See ya saturday
