2013 Dust Shaker Match Play Championship! Oxbow Falls, NY

Postby throwfromthewoods » Tue Nov 13, 2012 4:39 pm

Here, my friends, is the official announcement for the first CNYDGA-area tournament of 2013:

The Dust Shaker match-play championship!

On Saturday, May 18th 2013, shake off that off-season dust and join us for a new take on a familiar course. 64 players will converge on Oxbow Falls disc golf course in Canastota, NY to find out who came out of those bitter winter months with their skills intact!

There will be three different brackets playing all day. There will be a 16-player Pro Field, a 32-player Am Field, and a 16-player Rec Field. The day will consist of 9-hole matches, with the final 2 players from each bracket playing a Final Match for the right to be the first ever Dust Shaker Champions! EVERY player will play at least 36-holes throughout the day, regardless of how many matches you may lose.

Here are a few points to get you intrigued:

- First, this is a non-sanctioned tournament. No player needs to worry about Oxbow chewing up your ratings and spitting it out 20-points lower.

- Second, the brackets will be filled out completely at RANDOM the morning of the tournament. There is no “seeding” that will attempt to rank players. This should make it one of the more interesting players meetings you’ll be at this year.

- Third, these are 9-hole Match Play rounds. If you’re unfamiliar with how Match Play works, it’s a head to head match where players don’t count strokes. You simply try to win the hole by scoring better than your opponent. After 9 holes, whichever player wins the most holes moves on. At a course like Oxbow, this style helps equalize the field a bit. Make the most of your opportunities, and anyone can beat anyone.

- Finally, there’s more money to be had! I am ensuring that there are ample opportunities to not leave empty handed, even if you lose some matches. More than half the field in all 3 brackets will get to put cash back in their pockets at the end of the day.

This tournament is 100% cash-money. No vouchers, or discs, or words of wisdom will be given out as prizes. Pros, Ams, and Rec players alike are going to be handed envelopes filled with green. It will be a lot of fun, and a great way to kick off our tournament season! So stay tuned for pre-reg dates, more details, and an official flyer in the months to come!

Official details coming soon! I'm thinking one or two of these brackets will fill up fast, so I'm giving everyone a pre-warning to keep an eye out right after Thanksgiving. See you then!

I can't speak to any B-tiers, but the only big tour event scheduled at this point that weekend is the Selinske US Master's Championships in Burlington, NC.

If that is the case you guys could use this to find a Can-Am cup team.

Here is the official flyer for the 2013 Dust Shaker Match Play Championship!

There are a few items that I want to take an extra opportunity to point out:

- Due to the strict player limits for these brackets, you MUST contact me to pre-register. I don’t want people just sending me entry fees and find out I get over-booked for a field. I understand it is very early. If you pre-register with me, you are not required to pay the entry fee right away (I will, however, be setting a time prior to the event that it must be in by so be aware of that). If you contact me, I will enter you into the field. I will also create a wait list for each field in case people drop out closer to the event.

- Try to be respectful of my decision to allow registration without immediate payment. Please do not call me to enter you into the field unless you have decided that you will make an absolute effort to participate. I don’t want other players to be sitting on a waiting list because you think you might want to play. Thank you.

- Also, due to the amount of matches and payouts that need to be played during a single day in May, this tournament will not have many “extras.” We will have a $2 buy-in for an Ace Pool, and there will be several CTP holes for cash. No raffles, no jumbo-putts (I’m sure you’re mourning the potential loss of another beer koozie). I want to focus on the matches and the fun of playing head to head.

- This tournament is 100% cash payout. Every dollar that is not going towards set-up, supplies, or the player’s pack will end up back in your pockets. We will also have big-board brackets posted so that everyone will be able to check in on them and see who’s beating who.

- This will only be implemented if needed; but if there is an uneven field that will require the bracket to have byes, we will have “bye-ins.” You will have the (voluntary) opportunity to pay an additional fee for a chance at a first-round bye. We will randomly draw names from the players who paid in until all byes are filled. Any fees collected for this will go straight to the payout for that field.

To my knowledge, this is the first Match Play tournament that we’ve had in the Central, NY area. And I can’t think of a better course than Oxbow Falls to encompass the risks, rewards, frustrations, and elations that make Match Play so much fun. Throughout the winter months I will be posting more specifics on the actual format. It’s going to be a unique and interesting way to have a one-day Match Play event. But all you’ll need to do is show up and play. I’m hoping that you are as excited about it as I am, and we’ll see you there!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Turkey Day! Here's some good information for you to chew on alongside those leftovers:

I’ll try and break the format down as simply as possible from a player perspective. There is going to be a lot of shuffling and reshuffling going on to ensure every player gets at least 36-holes in, but that’s for me to worry about. If you saw my spreadsheet bracket, your head might explode. Here’s all you need to know:

There are two different types of fields, a 16-player field and a 32-player field. However, no matter which field you are playing in, your matches will progress the same way. You will be placed on a card with four players; or two matches. It will be a shotgun start, with all matches beginning at the same time. You will play two matches in a row, without needing to come back to the pavilion after the first 9 holes. So, after the first 9-hole match is completed, you will just change up your card so that the two winners will now play each other (since on a traditional bracket, they would be playing each other next anyways), and the two players who lost will play each other. That way, your card will play all 18 holes in a row before coming off the course.

After the first two matches, we will have our lunch break. Then the exact same format will be implemented for the afternoon matches. After the third and fourth round matches are done, everyone will come back in again and the final matches will be set. There will be 3 final matches. Players will be more than welcome to create a gallery to watch any of the final matches. Obviously, Oxbow Falls is not a very ‘open’ course. Spectators will have to take great care to not be a distraction or in the way. They will also have to defer to the players in the final matches if they are asked to move, quiet down, etc. Likewise, final match players will have to take responsibility for their play. Wait as long as you need to be comfortable with taking your shot, ask (NICELY) for a spectator to move, etc. I’m pointing this out now because I don’t want to hear a player whining about the gallery being the reason they just lost 7-2.

Tiebreakers are, of course, a necessity for Match Play. But we also need to make sure we don’t interrupt the flow of 64 players playing two consecutive matches on the course at the same time. So we will be using two different methods for tiebreakers.

- For the first and third round matches (which are the first 9-holes you play in the morning and again in the afternoon) we will use a CTP tiebreaker. Holes 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, and 16 will be designated as CTP holes. With this set-up, during your match you will play exactly 3 of these CTP holes regardless of what hole you start on. (for example, if your first match is holes 3-11, you will play the 4, 7, and 10 CTP holes) Whichever player wins 2 of 3 of these CTP holes DURING your match will hold the tiebreaker win. That way, no extra holes are needed in the case of a tie, and the next match can proceed for all players without disruption.

- For the second and fourth round matches (which will be the final 9-holes you play), as well as the final matches, we will use sudden-death holes. Since all players will be coming off the course after these rounds, any matches needing a tiebreaker will play a loop of holes 1, 3, 10, and 11 in sudden-death format until a winner is decided. I chose using these holes instead of just playing sudden-death on the next holes on the course after your match to avoid conflicting with any matches that may still be taking place ahead of you.

Using two different tiebreak methods should make these matches even more interesting. If a player is in danger of a tie in their first or third round match, and know they don’t have the CTP tiebreaker, it will certainly make them play that final hole more aggressively than playing for the tie and banking on the sudden-death holes that a player can fall back on in rounds two and four.

If it all seems confusing, trust me that it works out smoothly as far as the brackets are concerned.

If you need it broken down in a nutshell:

- Play your assigned match for nine-holes.
- Mark the 3 CTPs during the round in case a tiebreak is needed.
- Reshuffle your card so that the winners play each other and losers play each other.
- Play second nine-hole match.
- Play sudden-death holes if a tiebreak is needed.

That’s it. That is as basic as you’ll need to worry about. That’s two matches, lunch, two more matches, and everyone can watch the Championship matches. Simple, right?

Now, the only variance between the two different fields is how the first two rounds are calculated for payout purposes. The 32-player Am Field will work as a standard single-elimination bracket. 32 players will become 16, 16 will become 8, etc. This is how the cash will be calculated for this field. The 16-player fields are a bit trickier since they still need 4 rounds of play, and we want to avoid first-round byes if possible. A traditional 16-player bracket would only produce 3 rounds before the final match.

So, the 16 players in each of the Pro and Rec fields will be placed into four groups of 4 players each. After the first two matches, 2 players will be taken from each group (based on matches won, and total holes won) and they will create the 8-player bracket for the two afternoon matches. Again, this is just for payout purposes. Every player is still going to play four matches, even if you lose every one. And even if you lose, there will still be opportunities for some cash.

I know it’s a lot to sort out. If you have any questions or want clarification, feel free to ask here or contact me. I want all the players to be as comfortable with the format as possible on the day of the tournament so I don’t waste a lot of time going over the specifics that morning.

Make it simple and base your tie breaker based on # of holes won. Thats how it is done in the Can Am Cup. You dont want to lose based on a hole you had a push on because some one was 6 inches closer. also it brings 1 more element into the mental mix.

I'm not quite getting what you're suggesting. If someone wins more holes, then they just win the match. And the tiebreaker isn't needed.

You'll have to be a bit more specific for me?

If it comes down to the final 2 and its tied you determine it by # of holes won for the event. Contact Grandaddy or Rex at Chainbiters (link is on here)and ask him for the score cards template he uses for the CUP.

Oh! No, It's a bracket-style tournament. Tiebreakers are only to be used in the individual 9-hole matches. The 2nd round, 4th round, and final matches will play sudden death holes as a tiebreaker. When the final 2 play from each field they won't be using the CTP tiebreaker. That will only be for the first 9-hole match you play, and the third 9-hole match (first one in the afternoon).

Happy Holidays! Just letting everyone know that I’ve had players signing up in all 3 fields so far; even some out-of-towners (which is great!) This won’t be an event to wait for the last minute! For those that have already signed up, or are planning to, I’ve decided the deadline for entry fees will likely be in the first week of April. But that’s just a deadline. If you want to pay in earlier, all the better. I hope everyone has a great Christmas and New Year!

Slight change in the requirement for paying the entry fees. Basically, if you want to hold off and see if you can make the event closer to May 18th, you can. I'm hoping to at least get enough entry fees early to manage getting the player's pack ready in time. I'm doing this on my own, so I don't have any access to Organizational funds to foot the bill and let the players all pay day-of.

So, if you want to wait to commit, I'll be OK with that. Just be aware that the longer you wait, the more chance there is that your field will fill up. And also be aware that if you commit to pay day-of and don't show up and mess up the bracket and cause me to have to do a ton of last minute re-working of the field...well then you're just a jerk.

Cheers!

I was in such a rush yesterday I forgot to post the new official pre-reg deadline.

I'm going to set the pre-reg deadline for May 11th. One week before the event. That will give me the week to get all the brackets re-organized if I don't fill up a field. I will let everyone know of any last minute openings if a field has not been filled or if someone backs out last-minute.

It is with great regret that I must close down the 2013 Dust Shaker Match Play Championship. Circumstances have dictated that I leave the Syracuse area for better opportunities for my family. I am currently in negotiations with a job offer, but even if this one falls apart, there will be another in the works. If anyone wants to step up and take the reins, you are welcome to all my spreadsheets and charts. But unfortunately I don’t have the availability to run an event at this time.

I sincerely apologize to those who were looking forward to the event. I was, as well. I hope to get on the courses here as much as possible before the inevitable move. If this move drags out over months, I may even be able to play in a tournament or two. But I could also be packing up the car tomorrow. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or want to run a match play event either for the May 18th date or anytime in the future. Thank you.
