Looking to Start Weekly Women's Round

Postby NikkiD » Mon Apr 9, 2012 9:55 am

Hey Everyone,

I'm looking to get some women together for a weekly round; non-competitive, purely for fun and learning together. I'm thinking Sundays with a 10am tee time. If the time is no good though, I'm willing to be flexible on that. The first one will be Sunday April 22, course TBD.

Not sure how many women participate in this forum but I do know there are lots of wives/girlfriends/friends out there who like to play but may not go out too often on their own. So please let them know, guys. I would love to have a good mix of beginners and more experienced players but will play with anyone who shows up!!

If the turnout is good this could eventually turn into more of a league-type situation but for now I just want to see as many faces out there as possible for a fun, no pressure round. I'd like to get an idea of how many women are interested so please let me know.

Thanks guys!!

GREAT idea,Nikki! We used to have a LOT of female DGers a few year's back, but for one reason or another simply stopped playing! Most of them do not come to this website so I will reach out to the ones that I know that used to play and forward your info....KUDOS to you for leading this for the Rochester area......"Sheri" from Buffalo does a super job getting the gals from that area involved. You might want to cpntact her for more ideas.GOOD LUCK!  Dave

Yeah, Sheri from the nrdg forums (which are all wonky right now) aka Sheri Clam Princess, aka mamadoo, started a similar female gathering/league called Rocket Dawgs a few years ago in Buffalo. You should track her down just because she is all around awesome, but she might have some ideas for you too. Maybe she'll bring the Rocket Dawgs on a field trip to rochester one week.

One helpful thing I know they do is to have some friendly male companions play on the hole behind the women. They call them 'Gaurd Dawgs' and keep the riff raff from hassling the ladies, or throwing at them, etc.

I'll mention this to my wife. She tried playing a few times and gave up. Maybe playing with some other females would encourage her.

Good luck!

My girlfriend is interested in playing with you. She doesn't go on these forums herself, but asked me to post for her. She'd prefer a little earlier on the time (maybe 9AM?). This is a great idea!

@ Walker- Thanks for the response and encouragement, I'm sure I will end up contacting Sheri for some tips and input at some point- I've been told by many that she's the woman to talk to for sure! Also, that would be great if your wife decided to join us- I'm looking to make this as fun and beginner-friendly as possible!

@ Bobby- That would be incredible if we got some help with discs for women who don't yet have any, I've been considering what to do about that issue myself. Thanks so much for offering to contact Royce for me, it's very much appreciated!!

@ Cat- So glad to hear that you are interested in coming out to play! It's sure to be a good time and hopefully we can all learn from one another. Stay tuned for more info on course and time. Suggestions on either are welcome, by the way!

@ John- Happy that your girlfriend wants to join us!! The time is definitely still flexible and I will keep an earlier hour in mind moving forward.

Thanks for your feedback everyone!!

Nikki,

This is awesome on multiple levels. The GRDGC would love to support your league in any way possible. I know I have some merchandise that I could give you for CTP's, ect...

Let us know whatever help you need. Sounds like now it is just spreading the word. Our weekly doubles league starts tomorrow so I will let all the guys know to tell their significant others and check out this thread for info.

Good Luck!

Ryan,

Thanks so much for the support and the offer to spread the word!! I'm really pleased with all of the positive responses I've received so far and hope they translate into lots of new and returning women joining us on Sundays!

Having you guys behind this venture means a lot and I look forward to working in conjunction with the club's goal of promoting the sport in the area. Any merchandise you want to donate would be exceedingly appreciated as I would love to include CTP's but don't have a whole lot to offer at the moment.

Thanks again!

Hi Nikki,

That's a great idea and you can count me in for some weeks. I have thought about doing this before but I normally don't see too many girls playing. This will be a fantastic way to introduce more women to the sport though so I am excited. Just let me know which park :)

I have told a couple of my female coworkers about this as they have shown interest in disc golf since all I do is talk about it. I mentioned this to another friend asking if he knows any ladies that play and he knows a couple and said he would mention this to them too.

As I said, I've played for about a yr now and always with the boys so it would be awesome to start to play with fellow DGing ladies!

I'm stoked to hear that there is so much interest!! I really wasn't sure how this was going to go over and was totally prepared to go out with just a couple other girls but it's sounding like we are really going to have a good sized group out there- which is AWESOME!!

I'm looking into getting some discs for beginners and some other stuff for CTP's. Also, I'm still working out exact tee-time, course schedule (I plan on rotating through most of the local courses) and some other details. As soon as I have a better idea about these things I will post them right here so be sure to check back.

Questions/suggestions about anything are welcome as always!

one option is to follow the course schedule for the current doubles and singles leagues. that might minimize confusion. whatever you decide, give the info to Adam Brennan, our web master. screen name is AJB. he can post the info to the site, or make a separate page for you..

So happy to hear that you are interested in coming out, Lee!! And glad that word is getting around, too.

The schedule will be as follows:

April 22 @ Chili
April 29 @ Parma
May 6 @ Ellison
May 13 @ Basil

...and repeat from there, with the possibility of MCC being thrown in later in the summer

*10:40am meeting time, 11:00am tee-time

Can't wait for this to get underway, it's going to be a great time for sure!!

If the turnout ends up being strong, the PDGA is holding a "Women's Global Disc Golf Day" on May 12th:

Yes, thanks for mentioning that guys- I'm already registered for Sheri's tournament in Buffalo and will make an announcement about it on Sunday when our rec league starts.

If anyone is interested in going I'm definitely down for carpooling, by the way.

Ashley- So happy to hear that you will be joining us!! Beginners are totally welcome, that's part of what I hope to achieve with this endeavor as a matter of fact! It's going to be super relaxed so no worries. Any weeks that you can make it out we'll be happy to have you.

Dan (and Bobby I'm guessing?)- Thanks for helping me out with letting people know what's up- much appreciated!!

By my current estimates we should have at least 8-10 women playing this Sunday. Hopefully that's on the low side though and we get lots more!

If you enjoy playing the Womens Global event, I hope you will consider coming to the tournament I have organized at Lakeside Beach at the end of June. I think it is a great first(or 2nd) tournament because while players will be competing there will be no payout(only a trophy for top finishers for each division) for amateurs like there is at every other tournament. Instead all players will receive a large players pack(free stuff!) just for entering the event. I would love to have more female players, please let me know what I can do to make this event more appealing to you.

Luke- I've actually considered playing in this tournament- it sounds like a great time! Do you have women's divisions locked in yet? I will spread the word about this to any ladies I play with and hopefully get a good-sized group interested in going.
