This will be my first year doing the winter league. Do you play for tags? I've been putting off joining the club until January so that I don't have to pay my membership fee now and then have to pay again in 3 months, but if the league is for tags I guess my hands will be tied.

I could be wrong but this is what i understand.

That winter league is not for tags, it is a random draw double just like in league and we are playing for points i believe just like gonzo did when they ran the summer league.

You do not have to be a member to play in the league.

If you check out www.gonzodgc.org it should be up on the site by next week all the details about the winter league.

I don't know if I'm going into a touchy subject or not, but what is the difference between the Gonzo club and the GRDGC? Seems like all the same faces are posting here as their forums, also seems to be all Rochester, at least from what I can tell.

It is 10 bucks to play and you dont need to be a member. There is a handicap. all ams get one stroke and some get two just depends. But it is random draw. About the clubs...one day last year during winter league some guys had a idea to turn one league day into a surprise work day. It didnt go over well, it caused some drama. so some guys when out and started there own club.

Gonzo is not a club. Its just a label for the league. Its grdgc gonzo winter league. Should be a good time. And john is right it will start on nov 12th

Yup, that's the format we play every winter (at least since I started playing over 6 yrs ago)! It is a great time.. actually winter league was the first league I ever played with all these [grdgc] guys. One of the things that's so great about the league is how deep the payout is, so many more people come away feeling like they didn't just throw money away! That, and the great end of winter finals (which I think we usually contribute $1 or something like that every week to). You usually have to play a minimum of 13-15 weeks in order to be eligible for the finals, which means all the true hardcore winter golfers are there! Can't wait

what does everyone think about the handicap system used in previous years? we've had some discussion about it recently, and thought that maybe the max handicap given to any player should be 2 instead of 3.... what do people think about it? I know newer players got 3 when it was their first time at the league, then we adjusted after the round based on feedback from other players in the group.

I definitely think we should keep the 0, 1 and 2 stroke handicaps for everyone else, so it keeps the playing field even. Thoughts?

My only concern with doing a mulligan vs a stroke, is that the mulligan is not a guaranteed stroke... and the whole idea for the handicap is to guarantee that the lesser player/team gets to play on a more level playing field

Wow... I've never played DG in the winter. How do you not lose all your discs in the snow? Knowing that it can be done makes me want to try it.

some tape ribbon on the top / center of the disc --- it does affect the flight but in the snow, the ribbon comes in very handy. I vote for handicap, not mulligans for winter doubles

honestly, some people will need more than 2 strokes. if the two worst players get pared up vs 2 top players. they wont even be close even with 4 strokes. some people will need 3 maybe even 4. if you are gunna have it random you gotta make it fair for the lower level players.

and mulligans are stupid...in every situation or format because if you an unable to throw a certain shot, throwing it 10 times still wont mean u can throw the shot.

mulligans is a badddddddddddd Idea. hard enough to find one bad shot in the snow, try finding three. I think the handicap system we have now works fine. winter league isn't all that competitive anyway Its just about getting out there and keeping that muscle memory going and having fun.

It should not matter who is running the winter league.
If its gonzo, Rochester or both, just come out and have fun.

That way every one that wants to play show's up. So they don't determine if they come out or not, due to who is or who is not running the winter league.

Hope to see everybody out there, i know ill be there just about every Saturday to support the game i love.

Regardless whether if its a club or not. You received a Shirt, A Decal and a Towel. Gonzo funded the weekend at shorewinds, They had steak dinners for every "Member" that was there. There were multiple CTP's. Then they supplied Lunch at the year end, Multiple CTP's there as well. Plus the Saturday league was a ton of fun. As far as im concerned $25 for all that is not being Ripped off.

Is winter league at at Basil every week? If so, why? Are the other local courses playable during the winter?

Basil is the most winter friendly course and it makes things easier to just have it at one course every week. MCC has classes going on saturday morning. chili is too long and open. parma is brutal. ellison and churchville are pulled, brockport is too far and sawyer park.....

you missed my point. I didnt buy a club pack for the shirt, tag, decal, towel or for a weekend funded by gonzo club. I thought i was helping the sport...maybe raising money for tee-pads or baskets. I buy club packs from different clubs that i meet because the money from the packs gos toward thing like, new course, donations to parks, bench, trees, drinking fountains, so on and so on.
