Microbrews and Home brewing

Postby gator » Wed Mar 10, 2010 12:17 pm

I know there are a lot of disc golfers that appreciate a good microbrew. Part of the addiction is finding new beers to try so I thought we could post some of our favorite beers so others can go out and try them.

Tiger Beer - probably to large to call a micro brew but its one of the only lagers I've enjoyed lately.

Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald - One of My favorite Stout beers.

Great Lakes Burning River - My second favorite beer from Great Lakes Brewery is great Pale Ale.

Custom Brewcrafters Rasberry Wheat - A little for my tastes now but its the beer that made me discover there was more out there then just the generic stuff.

Custom Brewcrafters Oktoberfest Lager - My favorite Oktoberfest to date.

I know Campbell and I also brew our own. I'm about to bottle a hard cider that I started in November. I also I just brewed an oaked imperial stout that I'm looking forward to tasting. Tim I would love to get your recipe for that Oatmeal Stout you had at the Beechwood last year.

Great Lakes has so many good beers... my absolute favorite beer right now is their Blackout Stout. Its a seasonal that I can only find at MacGreggors and Beers of the World.

Home brewing sounds fun. Another hobby I don't have the money or space to get into! What exactly does it entail?

After the initial cost of the equipment the cost per beer breaks down to something less then a dollar I believe. The equipment can be bought at beers of the world or the custom brew store by eastview. There's two stages of kits, the more expensive one lets you do a couple more beers becuase it comes with a glass carboy but you can buy those seperately later if you want to. The second stage kits is like a 100 bones I believe. From start to finish its pretty easy directions to follow(they come with it) you can have beer in as little as 10 days. Of course you can get more and more into it and buy more equipment, even toast your own hops or propigate your own yeast.

Great Lakes gets my vote, albeit slightly biased. Their Holy Moses white is extremely tasty, their Christmas Ale I look forward to every year, and the Lake Erie Monster is something I've yet to try which is a seasonal that is around May I think.

I agree with the Edmund, really good. Their Commodore Perry I could drink all day.

Aside from there I'm gonna have to mention Oskar Blues out of Colorado, their ten-fiddy imperial stout (in a can!) is delicious
put it in the side

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy" ~Benjamin Franklin.

If this were a bunch of drunks, the favorite beers would be Bud, Keystone, Pabst, etc. Clearly this is a bunch of responsible connoisseurs.

but I am gonna go pour myself a beer right now, just for you Johnny. :D

Here's a fact im guessing you dont know. If you look foreward to having a beer your clynicaly defined as an alcoholic.

for example: you buy this really great micro brew on a monday and for some reason you dont have time to enjoy it untill thurdsay for whatever reason but you say things like i cant wait to try that beer.

If you have even 1 drink a day your considered to be an alcoholic if you do this everyday. (even tho they say red wine is good for your heart)

these are just a few facts ive learned since realizing that i was and will always be an alcoholic. recovering now 6 years.

ok i'll get off my soapbox now and let you enjoy the demon that lurks in every bottle.

Here you go Gator.

Modified Samual Smiths Oatmeal Stout Clone

Steep for 45min @ approx. 175:
9 oz Roasted Oats (325 for 75 minutes)
8oz British Crystal 55L
8oz British Chocolate
4oz Roasted Barley
Boil:
2.35oz Willamette hops (whole leaf) @70
1# Light Dry Malt Extract @70
3# Dark Liquid Malt Extract @70
3# Dark Liquid Malt Extract @40
1 tsp Irish moss @15
1oz Hiney @1
Nottingham Ale Yeast

I primed it with:
7/8 cup of wheat DME
1/4 cup Light DME
1/8 cup corn Sugar
I was using up my leftovers, 5oz corn sugar will work fine.

US05 yeast will probably work just as good. 2oz of Willamette in pellet form would be good if whole leaf hops arn't availiable. Not sure why I added honey, its probably not necessary.

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and The American Society of Addiction Medicine define alcoholism as "a primary, chronic disease characterized by impaired control over drinking, preoccupation with the drug alcohol, use of alcohol despite adverse consequences, and distortions in thinking." The DSM-IV (the dominant diagnostic manual in psychiatry and psychology) defines alcohol abuse as repeated use despite recurrent adverse consequences. It further defines alcohol dependence as alcohol abuse combined with tolerance, withdrawal, and an uncontrollable drive to drink. The one drink a day thing and the fact that a person may look forward to a beer after work is part of the AA definition and has nothing to do with anything clinical or medical.

Being the drunk that I am I must say that I am very fond of the Victory brewing companies higher alcohol content beers (gets me to the floor faster). With names like Golden Monkey and Storm King Stout how could you go wrong. My favorite beer of all time tho has to be Brooklyn brewing companies Special OPs, a bourbon cask fermented Stout that weights in at about 13% abv. There are a variety of these type beers around and I have tried a few and all that I have tasted have been good. Being a former home brewer (and absolute drunk) I think just about any craft beer company has a worth while product, try them all.
