Just got back from the clinic and doubles at TC3 great time. If your not registered or still thinking about going to the DIO get on it, save your dollars and be there Labor Day Weekend! Nate, Avery, and Val are awesome and let's show them Upstate loves disc golf.

Pat has done a great job to get these top pros to CNY and if you love disc golf and have the time TC3 is an awesome venue. Anyone looking to put a capstone on their Summer 2012 Disc Golf Tournaments should be there.

Hello all,

I’m pleased to announce a SIGNIFICANT UPDATE to the Disc Ithaca Open. We’ve had feedback from a number of amateur players who were financially struggling with the additional cost active membership in the PDGA, a requirement of the A-Tier Sanctioning. At our club meeting last night we decided to re-sanction the event FOR AMS ONLY as a B-Tier. ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP IS NO LONGER REQUIRED to play in the DIO, a $10 temporary membership is sufficient and can be included when registering on-line at: http://www.pdgasignup.com/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=1340880535

As we only wanted to make the tournament more accessible, there will be no changes to our planned players packages and tournament payouts.

PLEASE PRE-REGISTER as we are not planning to take registrations the day of the event. If you are unable to do so on-line, please contact Pat Govang, Brandon Fortenberry or Ralph B Robinson (aka Barry or Sensei) via facebook so we can make alternative arrangements.

Thanks,

The DIO organizers

Hello All,

The DiscIthaca club is looking forward to wanted to let everyone know online registration closes this Friday at 8:00 p.m. Links are in post above.

If you're planning to attend the DiscIthaca Monthly this Saturday (random doubles, $10 entry, 10:00 a.m.) you can register there.

If you're planning on coming and cannot make either of those happen, you know where to find us to see if alternative arrangements can be made.

If you're into numbers, right now the total pro purse is approaching $5K.... do the math. ;)

If you need a place to stay, contact us - free camping is available and we'll do what we can to hook you up if that's not your cup of tea.

Your friends down in Ithaca,

Pat

The course is in tournament form. OB lines are painted, 10m circles are in and alternate long tees on 12 and 13 are in. We, along with the TC3 crew, will be doing a little more over the course of the week - but it is ready for practice now.

Also - Online registration is closed. If you are planning on coming and haven't let me know yet - please do so at your earliest convenience. There will be no day-of registration and we will lock the field at our club meeting Wednesday evening. Message me on Facebook if you want in.

Good course and very well run. Decidedly geared toward Rec and Pro players. From the Blacks much like Chili with some elevation. If you can throw 350ft you will be able to putt on 16 out of 18 holes from Reds.

Great Tourney, Great Friends, Horrible Payouts...

I know I'm not the only person who feels this way and I say this in comparison to all of other Tournaments that I attended over the years.

Normally I wouldn't say anything negative toward a Tourney, but after leaving on Sunday I felt like the AM's were taken advantage of and the ones that played well were definitely not rewarded properly.

The AM's made up most of the field, in turn, providing a nice chunk of money going towards those who received the Pro payouts. Not to shabby if your a pro.

On the Flip side, If you were an AM and placed, you most likely received a Gift card to an Online Disc Golf store that is pretty much out of stock with many of the over priced products that they sell.

One more thing before I go...

The so called "Fat Player Packs" were worth Half of what you paid to play that weekend.

I'm Just Sayin...

All in all Pat and the Crew did a great job and everyone I bumped into that weekend had a good time.

Just Keepin It Real,

John

Looking at the PDGA site for the Tourney results...what a god damn scam. The numbers that are posted are completely fictitious. 1st-3rd in advanced all got the exact same payout...a voucher for a pair of shoes online. Not sure about the other divisions but sounds like it was the same horse crap dumped on all the AM divisions. Loved the course. No way I will bother returning to that tourney next year. To many other good options to bother with is malarkey.

Yep, i've had the same convo with others on this. Not cool at all, that payout was bullshit. Great tourney and host, but that was not cool. I had a blast, but chances of going back are slim. The voodoo site is ridiculous also, $21.95 for z plastic LOL. I thought i heard it was a 200% payout above pdga rules for ams, well that is definitely not the case. The 200% above or whatever, went to the pros, not ams. I understand getting those pros to come back and wanting big names, but we took it on the chin. Gonna make some enemies out of this post, but if you are gonna run a tournament don't make people feel like they got ripped off. This isn't the first tourney it's happened at either this year. Doesn't everyone involved in the tournament and pdga make more money off the ams? I don't want to get ripped off and don't want you to not make money; just find that middle. Boom

This is kinda the cherry on top sorta thing.

I'm not sure if anyone else has tried to redeem said Vouchers from the DIO, but if you were successful in doing so could you leave a post on the method you used.

I've contacted Voodoo Disc Golf VIA email and now await a reply.

Sorry to hear that Jonesy, I feel your pain.

Bobby, that is a great location next year definitely. The Growler is going to happen at a site TBD a private course is the ideal setting even if we have to make it safari. Would like something near Rochester but on the the eastern side. This is going to be a word of mouth event happening soon. Pro's are welcome as Caddies and possibly for the 3 on 3 event after the tourney which will be over by noon. All further information will be going offline to protect the names of the innocent.

Re: DISC ITHACA OPEN BABY!

Postby Tony Inzana » Thu Sep 6, 2012 2:35 pm

Funny thing is --- I ran an amateur only tourny in 2007 at Parma ---- Amateur Championships and had 17 people show up because no one wanted to come play Parma at that point in time.

I have to give my 2 cents on this topic and hope all can understand my opinion. 1st of all, I hope everyone was happy with the RFDO player packs and payout. I did add to both the ams and the pros and we really did pay over 160% to the ams and over 200% to the pros.

I have seen and participated in many tourny's over the last 13 years. there has been many differnet philosophies during this time period. Some feel that the ams stay amateur too long because they can continue to win merch easily and what's the motivation to move up to pro. There has been discussions on 2 levels of pros so that the marginal pros can also have a chance to cash instead of always donating to the top pros, especially in you live in NC or Florida where only the top pros ever cash. So adding cash to the Pro divisions should give incentive to people to turn pro. For those top advanced players, it will also improve your game to move up.

As the sport grows, there will be continued discussions on how to grow the sport. I think that the rec division should be a trophy only division or just minimal prizes. Intermediate should get more and advanced should get the most as far as payout, which motivates people to continue to move up in the ranks. But I do not agree with advanced players getting hundreds of dollars of merch. I think there should be a cut-off and I think all ams should get a nice player pack so at least all get something for their entry fee. That being said, the player pack needs to be desireable without inflated prices being used.

As far as the Non-stop disc golf tour/DIO ---- this is a completely different monster. There is a total different mindset used in the payouts and Pat Govang i do not think had much to say about this. After all, he was the TD, but Dave Feldberg and crew were in charge of the payouts. They are traveling pros, some of the best in the world, and they are trying to make a living. Therefore, they are using the merch from their sponsors to generate funds to support their tour. They feel that it is a priveledge for a town to be able to have them there for the weekend. They run a clinic for the ams, trying to teach and spread the word. They run a tourny and payout using their merch, which i guess they think is enough for the ams. They increase the pro purse to attract more pros which hopefully will give more enjoyment to the ams, being able to see these top guys in their town throwing discs at their courses. There is nothing illegal about what they did in regards to PDGA sanctioning, but obviously the am payouts were very poor and we all know that. I also do not agree with paying out every Pro and only half of the Pro masters. I also disagree on the final 9, thinking that the top pro should have had a chance to play as well.

So this is where we have our issues. Is it worth small am payouts to enjoy a clinic and a weekend around the best players in the world? It is very difficult to attract the top touring pros unless you have a good payout. Trust me, I worked so hard to bring the pros to rochester and we had a huge turnout and it was a success. Having said that, I am considering trying to do it again next year, as long as we can get the pros to keep coming this way without having to compromise the am payout. i will continue to spread the wealth at my tourny's and hope that all of you appreciate how we run things in Rochester, especially now.

Well, that's my 2 cents.... Don't forget that some of the most important things are the people you play with, the enjoyment you get personally from the competition and from playing different courses in different cities, and just enjoying the positive vibes you get from the disc golf community. I know payout is important, but it's not everything and most people have more merch and discs then they know what to do with anyways.

So who is onboard to help for next year's RFDO to raise enough funds to make the ams and pro payouts HUGE !!!!! Lemme know cuz we are gonna get started soon for next year and gonna make it even bigger !!! :D :D

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Our small club met or exceeded all PDGA A-Tier and B-Tier requirements for all divisions. Here are the numbers calculated per PDGA standards - I will let them speak for themselves. Congrats Tony on your first A-Tier win :D

Running tourney's are not rocket science - they aren't that lucrative either.

For what it's worth, I have no problem sharing the numbers for the DIO - maybe it will help some of you looking to run your own events in the future. While it may have been run differently and the points above will be taken into consideration by the club for next year - certainly no one was taken advantage of.

The total tournament income: $8,310
The total tournament expense: $8,559
The bottom-line: -$249*
* as a business guy I usually run a tight budget but the loss is because some d-bag stiffed me for $250 in sponsorship cash; otherwise I would have made a whopping $1

If you can get Fucillo to put up a car with those kind of numbers, you're a much better man than I.

The NSDGT guys put up $1,400 merch for the Am prizes.(the above number less trophy value). For this he charged the tourney $1,000 (about a 30% discount off face value) and put $450 of that back into the pro-purse. I'm pretty sure the rest of that cash went to Voodoo - but that was a NSDGT matter. If you have any feedback on their part of the event - you can e-mail them via http://www.nonstopdiscgolf.com

We had a total of $4083 that went into the pro-purse, less the $450 above that leaves $3,633. The DiscIthaca club put in ~$600, we raised $700 from sponsors, and Comet Skateboards put in $2,400.

Our expenses were about $840 for PDGA sanctioning, course materials - flags and spray paint, scorecard printing, and spotter packages, etc. This was paid for from the 'margins' the tournament made on the players packages and scorecard holders.

We're a very small club without the benefit of 38+ years of disc golf that you have in Rochester, we had a great time planning and throwing the tourney. All involved really appreciated the positive feedback. We hope to do it again with the same attitude as Tony - we'll make it bigger, better and badder next year.

Thanks for allowing me to reply,

Pat

Pat, thanks for the reply and for providing the details. You and your club did a great job with the event. The course looked great and I think all had a very enjoyable time. Most don;t realize how involved running these type of events are and how hard it is to provide big payouts. Hopefully our club and your club can take more initiative in helping, especially in bringing in sponsors which is one of the toughest things to do, but is the way to giving the big payouts. Thanks again for all you do !!!
